Introduction: Varroa mite is an important parasitic agent of European honey bees (Apis mellifera) in Iran and the world. The use of chemical pesticides increases the treatment costs, resistence to pesticides and ontamination of beehive products. Herbal extracts are promising alternative for chemical pesticides.
Objectives: The aim of this study was to evaluate in-vivo effects of hydroalcoholic extracts of thyme (Thymus vulgaris) and lavender (Lavandula angustifolia) on V. destructor.
Methods: Sampling was undertaken from 320 bee hives. The study was carried out on 24 infected hives. Treatment groups were 5% and 10% spray of hydroalcoholic extracts of thyme and lavender, Apistan as positive group and negative control group with three replicates. Dead mites were collected on the floor of each hive at 12, 24, 36, 48 and 72 hours and counted.
Results: The highest mortality of V. destructor mites in thyme (87.3±4.5) and lavender (76.3±4) treatment groups with concentration of 5% was at 48h. Effectiveness of thyme (74.9%) was higher than lavender (71.5%). While, the highest mortality of examined mites in thyme (97.3±2.7) and lavender (89.3±2.5) treatment groups at 10% concentration was at 36h. There was significant difference between effectiveness of thyme (77.2%) and lavender (74.3%).
Conclusion: The results uncovered hydroalcoholic extracts of thyme and lavender had remarkable mortality effects on V. destructor and they may be promising alternative for chemical compounds. However, efficacy of hydroalcoholic extract of lavender was significantly higher and may be more suitable opption than hydroalcoholic extracts of thyme in use.
