Introduction: Avian coccidiosis is one of the important parasitic infection and economic losses which causes with Eimeria infection in Iran and worldwide. To date, many released anticoccidial drugs are the main sources of drug resistance and poultry meat residue. Urtica dioica and Foeniculum vulgara are plants with antibacterial, antifungal, and pharmacologic effects.
Objectives: This work was aimed to study on effects of hydroalcoholic extracts of U. dioica and F. vulgara on sporulation of Eimeria oocysts.
Methods: Fecal samples were collected from infected broiler chicken farms using flotation technique from West Azerbaijan province, North West of Iran and washed. About 5×104 oocysts per mL were provided and exposed with different concentrations (20, 40, 60, and 80 mg/ml) of hydroalcoholic extracts of U. dioica and F. vulgar along with negative and positive groups with triplicates. Percentage of sporulated and non-sporulated oocysts in different times of 12, 24, 48, and 72h were count.
Results: Results revealed that anticoccidial effect of examined hydroalcoholic extracts on sporulation of Eimeria oocysts was dose dependent. Urtica dioica extract inhibit sporulation of oocysts of Eimeria spp. at concentrations of 60 and 80 mg/mL after 48h and 72h. Foeniculum vulgare extract also inhibit sporulation of Eimeria oocysts at concentration of 80 mg/mL after 24h, 48h, and 72h.
Conclusion: From the results of this work, it was concluded that all examined hydroalcoholic extracts of U. dioica and F. vulgara may inhibit sporulation of Eimeria oocysts under laboratory condition.
