Background: Poultry is the main source of animal protein worldwide, which is affected by various parasitic diseases. Coccidiosis is one of the most important parasitic diseases of industrial poultry, and continuous monitoring of its prevalence is necessary.
Objectives: The prevalence of coccidiosis among broiler farms in Neka County was investigated. Methods: 20 industrial poultry farms in Neka county were visited in 2022 and the data of farms and their health conditions were recorded. In each broiler farm with a capacity of 10,000 chickens, 10 cardboard sheets with dimensions 20 × 50 cm were placed to collect fresh samples. Fresh samples were transferred to the laboratory in the shortest time to perform the flotation test. Finally, the oocysts of Eimeria (OPG) were counted under a light microscope using a McMaster method.
Results: Of the 20 poultry farms studied, 3 cases of coccidiosis infection caused by two species, Eimeria acervulina and E. brunetti, were detected. The prevalence of this protozoan in Neka County in this study was calculated to be 1.5%. Among these farms, the highest number of oocysts per gram of feces was 14,500 and the lowest was 3,000.
Conclusions: The prevalence of poultry coccidiosis in Neka city, despite the continuous use of coccidiostats in feed, indicates the need for systematic management of farms and control of factors such as the condition of litter, ventilation, methods of coccidiostat consumption, and density.
