Neosporosis is one of the most important animal diseases worldwide, that cause abortion in the animal especially cattle. Cow and small ruminants such as sheep and goats are the most intermediate hosts of parasite. Due to little information about Neospora caninum in small ruminant, this cross-sectional study was carried out by PCR method in sheep and goats slaughtered in Kashan 2015-2016. Heart samples of one hundred and eighty animals including 90 sheep and 90 goats were collected. After DNA extraction, N. caninum was identified by Polymerase Chain Reaction using primers Np21plus and NP6plus. By observation of a 350 bp band, the sample was assigned as positive. Animal data and PCR results were recorded in SPSS. 16 and analyzed by X2 and Fischer exact tests.
Neospora caninum DNA was detected in 13 heart samples of small ruminant (7.2 %). The prevalence of infection in sheep and goats were 7.8% and 6.7% respectively. The odd ratio of infection in sheep compare to goats was 1.18 (OR=1.18). The highest rate of neosporiasis in small ruminants was observed in winter 17.8% and no infection was seen in autumn (P=0.003). The rate of infection according to the sex statistically was significant (P=0.04). The prevalence of N. caninum in small ruminants was relatively low in Kashan compare to World and Iran. Considering the role of dogs in transmission of infection, health education of farmers and ranchers in order to take care and improve management conditions for prevention is recommended.
